Bethel 33

Bethel No. 33 was instituted August 27, 1949 through the efforts of "Mother" Aileen Card, Past Grand Guardian and Chairman of Promotion; Mrs. Grace Francis, Past Bethel Guardian of Bethel No. 7, who became the Charter Bethel Guardian of Bethel No. 33 and Mr. John Whitehead, who became the Charter Associate Bethel Guardian of Bethel No. 33.

The Council was installed by "Mother" Card. The 31 new members were initiated by Bethel No. 29 with Norma Traylor as Honored Queen and the 38 Officers and Choir installed into office by Dayleen Whitehead, Past Honored Queen of Bethel No. 7 and other Installing Officers from Bethel No. 7 and No. 29.

The Grand Guardian was "Mother" Martha Gatzert and the Associate Bethel Guardian was "Dad" Herman Kost.

The Honored Queen's pin was presented by Daylene Whitehead at the Institution and the princess pins were presented by "Mother" Muriel Ottman, Past Grand Guardian, on November 4, 1950. The first set of crowns were presented by "Mother" Lois Barker, Past Bethel Guardian of Bethel No. 7, on October 15, 1949.

The Bethel met on the first and third Saturday of each month at Elmwood Odd Fellows Hall, from August 27, 1949 until January 20, 1951. At that time the meetings were changed to the first and third Tuesdays. The Bethel moved from Elmwood Hall to the Northeast Masonic Temple during October of 1959. In May 1978, they moved to the First United Methodist Church in North Kansas City, Missouri and since May 1983, the Bethel has met at the Alpha Masonic Temple on the first and third Wednesdays at 7:00 p.m.

In September 1953, the first Friendship night was held. Louise Borchers (Charter Member) conceived the idea "because we were the youngest Bethel in the area and rarely had visitors." She thought if area Bethels were invited to fill the chairs, they would have to come and visit. Every Bethel in the Kansas City area attended including Bethel No. 20 and No. 24 which met on the same night.

The first area Bethel dance was held near Valintines day in 1954. Cara Lee Taylor (Charter Member) was the Queen of the dance. The Queen was chosen by the Bethel that sold the most tickets. This was a fore-runner to the Thanksgiving Ball which was originally the Ways & Means to bring Supreme Session to Kansas City in 1957. Cara Taylor Irvin also served as Bethel Guardian of Bethel No. 37 from 1965 to 1968.

In May of 1956, Bethel No. 33 started a Drill Team. It was the second team in the Kansas City area and Missouri to be started. Bethel No. 29 was the first. Our first Drill Team competition at Supreme Session was in 1957 in Kansas City. We won a cup. At Supreme Session in Phoenix in 1958, we won first place in our division and at Supreme Session in 1959, we won a third place trophy. Our Drill Team Captains were: Nancy Cross, Carole Lovan and Lynne Hons. Fred Hons was the Drill Master.

Loretta Farmer, Mom Francis Assisted Ruth Mary Leavitt, Past Supreme Guardian, in starting the KCJD Line Club. Loretta was the first President of the Kansas City Area Job's Daughters Line Officers Club and was also Grand Bethel Junior Princess in 1958.

The Bethel Bible was recovered in memory of Mary Lou Summers Hohenberg. A new American Flag with an engraved plate attached was presented in memory of Betty Kern Carra.

In January 1985, the Bethel started a Clown Unit. The unit performed in area parades and at hospitals and nursing homes. They competed in the Clown Competition held at Supreme Session in Rapid City, South Dakota in August 1985.

The Bethel song to the tune of "True Love" was written in 1963 by Barbara Ann Bisby, Past Princess.

We have three Past Grand's: "Mom" Frakes served as Grand Guardian 1981-82, Grand Bethel Guardian in 1984-86 and was the first elected sponsor of KCJD Line Club. "Dad" Sanders was Associate Grand Guardian 1988-89 and Grand Bethel Associate Guardian 1992-93 and “Dad” W.R. (Bill) Perry was Associate Grand Guardian 2000-2001.

“Dad” Dennis Flanery is currently Associate Grand Guardian 2006-2007.

We have one Past Supreme: In August 1989, "Mom" Marlene Frakes, was elected to the line for the Supreme Guardian Council. She served as Supreme Guardian from August 1992 to August 1993. Supreme Session was held in Kansas City, Missouri in August 1993.

In July of 1997, Bethel #52 merged with Bethel #33. At that time the Bethel meeting nights were changed to the 2nd and 4th Wednesday.

With the merger of the two Bethels, we start new history "Building a Stronger Link for Job's Daughters". At the merger ceremony on August 4, 1996, the two charters were linked together by Mom Barbara Bauer Perry, Charter Member of Bethel #33 and Mom Mary Youngblood, Charter Guardian of Bethel #52. A special Bible Ceremony was held in June of 1997. Mom Barbara Perry BG #33 retired the original Bethel #33 bible and Mom Carolyn Brasfield PBG #52 retired the Bethel #52 bible. A new bible was presented by PSG Mom Marlene Frakes in honor of the Charter Guardian of Bethel #33 Mom Grace Francis and the Charter Guardian of Bethel #52 Mom Mary Youngblood.

On March 7, 2001, Bethel #42 merged with Bethel #33. Bethel #42's Charter was added to the link. Mom Linda Mosby, PHQ #42 & PBG#42 was Grand Guardian 1996-1997.

Bethel 52

Bethel #52 was instituted on June 4, 1961 and chartered on September 17, 1961, in Parkville, MO. There were 33 names on the charter. The first Guardian was Mary Youngblood and the Associate Bethel Guardian was Donald Grisham. The first Honored Queen was Karen Watts.

The Bethel Bible was presented by Mary Lou Biggs Grand Guardian and Elmer Kuehn Associate Grand Guardian at the institution.

We have one Past Grand: Dad Edwin L. Andler served as Associate Grand Guardian 1986-87.  We also have one Grand Bethel Honored Queen: Joleyne Thompson served as Grand Bethel Honored Queen in 1887-88.

Known Thanksgiving Ball Queens and Princesses: Lynne Shephard, Monya Cejka, Madolyn Davidson, Debbie Pilbeam and Andrea Crosby

Information on Bethel #52 was researched in GGC Proceedings & Directory and KCJD Line Rosters by PSG Marlene Frakes. She was would appreciate hearing of any correction or additions. E-mail her at Frakes4001@sbcglobal.net

In July 1996, Bethel #52 merged with Bethel #33 in North Kansas City.

Bethel 42

       On March 7, 2001, Bethel #42 merged with Bethel #33. Mom Linda Mosby, PHQ #42 & PBG#42 was Grand Guardian 1996-1997.Bethel #42

On March 12, 1955, 34 girls were initiated and formed a new Bethel in Belton, Mo. The first Honored Queen was Jean Ann Jones, and her mother, Elizabeth Jones served as the first Guardian for a brief time. Mom Florence Fulton was installed as Guardian and Dad Hermann Tabor was installed as Associate Guardian and have been called the Mother & Dad of Bethel 42 The Bethel received its Charter on November 14, 1955. Since those first 34 girls were initiated over 45 years ago, an additional 417 girls have taken the Obligation and joined Bethel #42, a total of 451 members.

The members worked hard those first years recruiting new girls and raising money. They sold perfume, date & data books, pens and held rummage sales; but the most profitable moneymaker was manning the concession stand at the Belton Ball Park. It is reported that the girls made the work in the concession stand look like so much fun, they were often asked if other girls could work there, too. The "pat" answer was, "No, you have to be a Job's Daughter to be in here." And they would immediately be asked, "How do I become a Job's Daughter?" Many new members were recruited at the ballpark. The concession stand was profitable, in fact so profitable, that a second stand was built at a cost of $300, which was paid for by the Bethel. Minutes from a Bethel meeting during the summer schedule of working in the concession stands states, `no shorts are to be worn while working the concession stands."

Money from the stands helped the girls attend Grand Sessions, paid for most of their activities and Bethel expenses. A note in the minutes from 1960 states, "$300 will be used for train fare and special meals on the trip (to Grand Session)." Also in those minutes the girls are instructed, "No slacks are to be worn on the trip to St. Louis except in hotel rooms." In 1961 forty-four (44) girls registered for Grand Session from Bethel #42.

The Bethel was active and had enough members to have a pro-tem night and the Bethel Choir did the Bible Ceremony for many installations and the Flag was usually presented by a member of the DeMolay. It was a close-knit Masonic family in Belton and the Masons, Eastern Star, Job's Daughters and DeMolay worked hard to be successful. Bethel #42 donated $1,000.00 to the Mason's for the Building Fund for a new building for the Lodge and it was reported that the Job's Daughters contribution was the first donation for the new lodge. The Installation of Honored Queen Susan George was held in the newly built Masonic Lodge in December, 1963. The Bethel members' hard work in the concession stand every summer made the Bethel treasury flourish. Tile was purchased for the dressing room and baths downstairs in the Lodge and also the floors of the concession stands were covered with tile purchased by Bethel #42. A snow cone machine was also purchased to be used in the concession stands. Early minutes note that a punch bowl was purchased for $3.15 for use at Bethel meetings, and the members would adopt a family at Christmas time and furnish food and toys for that family.

Bethel #42 Socials have been much the same as other Bethels across the State. They went to the movies, the Ice Capades, the circus, Kidnap breakfasts, bowling, and skating. The minutes indicate that at a meeting in 1973, the girls voted to go ice-skating. The following meeting minutes state, "The ice-skating social was canceled because the ice melted, so we went roller-skating." Another notation talks about having a Walkathon - walking to a farm, camping out overnight, having a Church Service on Sunday morning and possibly walking back home. No indication of how far they would walk!

Members participated in "Go to Church Sunday," "Official Visits," and "Friendship Nights." One meeting was a joint meeting with Bethel #26. Minutes were read for each Bethel, two Treasurer's Reports, two sets of Receipts and Bills. The Bethel #26 officers sat on the floor with the officers from Bethel 42. There have been Mini-Sessions and Grand Sessions. There have been numerous Grand Bethel officers and Representatives, our present Honored Queen, Randi, being the latest, with Wendy Turner, a past Honored Queen of 42 serving on the Grand Bethel Advisory Board. We have had Thanksgiving Ball Royalty, and KCJD Line Officers; and the adults from Bethel #42 have held Grand Offices in the Grand Council of Missouri and one Past Honored Queen, our present Guardian, is a Past Grand Guardian of Missouri and the present Grand Bethel Guardian of Missouri.

The Bethel members participated in the Bible Ceremony for installations at Belton Masonic Lodge #450 and Belton Eastern Star #142; and in later years, the Eastern Star presented the Bible Ceremony at Bethel #42's installations. Minutes of August 1971 state, `Since the light bill was raised for the Masons, we (the Bethel) will help them by paying $10 a month."

After the loss of the Concession Stand contract, money making projects included selling candy, candles, Christmas cards, rolling papers, car washes, working in the Mason's fireworks stand, slave auctions, garage sales, chicken bird puppets, ice cream socials, dime-a-dip-dinner, and a Tupperware party. Bethel members participated in the Belton parade for years and then began making funnel cakes for sale not only for Belton's Fall Festival, but for Raymore and Raytown festivities as well.

The Bethel instituted the practice of asking a question on the ritual work. If the question was correctly answered, the daughter would win $1. If the question was missed, the next meeting, the question was worth $2, and the amount was increased by $1 each meeting until a right answer was given. They also had a "Traveling Basket," with a small gift. It was awarded one meeting and the girl who was chosen had to return it the next meeting, filled with a small gift.

In March, 1980, Bethel #42 celebrated its 25th Anniversary. Throughout the years, Past Honored Queens and members have returned to help and serve on the Bethel Council. Past Honored Queens have served as Guardians, some more than one time. Bethel #42 appreciates all the hard work and support given the daughters who have served over the 45 years, and all the friendships of other Bethel daughters who have helped us to try to keep Bethel 42 active. In December 1973, at the Honored Queen's last meeting, these words were noted at the bottom of the minutes, "Friends, they are the most sacred and least appreciated of all our belongings. A friend is a present you give yourself." This Honored Queen was Linda Kopfer, our own Linda Mosby.
